What nature does in summer, skin does too

After the remarkably warm weather we enjoyed in May, followed by weeks of rain, cooler days and sudden bursts of sunshine, the landscape around us has been constantly adjusting.

The fells have shifted from the bright greens of spring into deeper summer tones. Streams that were flowing freely a few weeks ago begin to slow. Plants adapt to periods of warmth and dryness, conserving moisture where they can. Nothing stands still. Nature responds to the conditions around it.

Our skin behaves in much the same way.

We often think of summer as the easiest season for our skin. More daylight, more time outdoors and a healthy glow can create the impression that everything is thriving. Yet summer brings its own challenges. Heat, sunlight, wind, travel, swimming and changing routines all influence how skin behaves.

Like the landscape, our skin is constantly adapting.

When moisture becomes more precious.

After several warm days, the ground begins to lose moisture more quickly. Gardeners know this well. Soil that felt rich and damp in spring can suddenly become dry beneath the surface.

Skin experiences something similar.

Warm temperatures increase water loss through the skin, whilst sunshine, wind and air conditioning can all contribute to dehydration. The result is often surprising. Skin may appear oilier whilst actually lacking moisture underneath.

This is why summer skincare is often less about richness and more about hydration.

Lightweight ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, as found in our Balancing Facial Serum, help attract and retain moisture, supporting skin without feeling heavy during warmer weather.

Finding balance.

Walk through a Cumbrian meadow in midsummer and you’ll notice how nature seeks balance. Too much rain and growth becomes overwhelmed. Too little and plants begin to struggle. The healthiest landscapes are rarely those at either extreme.

The same is true of skin.

Increased temperatures encourage the production of sebum, the natural oil that helps protect the skin. Whilst this is entirely normal, excess oil combined with perspiration, sunscreen and daily impurities can sometimes lead to congestion or breakouts.

Ingredients such as Niacinamide help support balance, whilst Salicylic Acid and Zinc PCA can help maintain clarity without stripping the skin of the moisture it still needs. These active botancials can be found in our targeted Facial Serums.

Rather than fighting the skin, summer is often about working with it.

Learning from the coast.

Along the Cumbrian coastline, seaweed thrives in an environment of constant change. Exposed to shifting tides, sunlight, wind and saltwater, it has developed remarkable resilience.

Rich in minerals, antioxidants and amino acids, seaweed has long been valued in skincare for many of the same reasons. It helps support hydration, defend against environmental stress and leave skin feeling replenished. Our Kombu Seaweed face care collection harnesses the benefits of marine botancials, providing gentle care, suitable for all skin types.

A lighter approach.

Summer can tempt us to complicate our routines. We search for solutions to every change we notice in our skin. Yet often the most effective approach is a simpler one.

Gentle cleansing to remove sunscreen, perspiration and daily impurities.

Lightweight hydration to replenish moisture without heaviness.

Botanical ingredients that support balance rather than overwhelm it.

Refreshing hydrosol mists that bring comfort on warmer days.

Nourishing bodycare after time spent outdoors. Small rituals that feel restorative rather than demanding.

Moving with the season.

The landscape never resists the arrival of summer. It adapts. It responds. It changes.

Perhaps our skincare should do the same.

As the season unfolds, our skin’s needs shift alongside it. Paying attention to those changes and choosing sustainable skincare ingredients that support hydration, balance and resilience, can help maintain healthy, comfortable skin throughout the months ahead.

What nature does in summer, skin does too. The art lies in learning to listen.
