Seasonal changes always affect our day-to-day lives in some way, no matter whether we live in the middle of the countryside or in the heart of a busy city. Having recently moved home from central Manchester to the Derbyshire countryside, I’ve had more opportunity to slow down and appreciate the transition from summer to autumn.

October means shades of red, brown and maroon, scented candles and apple-crisp air, and as the seasons change, we naturally adjust our routines to accommodate the cosy season. When the colder, shorter days do roll in, making small changes to our day-to-day can help to improve how we feel as we lean into autumn time. Here, we’re sharing some thoughts on how you can make the most of it.

Adapting Your Skincare Products For Autumn / Winter

As we enter into the ‘-ber’ months, you may begin to notice a difference in your skin type or texture as the seasonal changes bring about chillier air. We also tend to spend more time inside with the central heating on full blast (if you’re anything like me). With the drop in temperature and humidity, our skin tends to lose moisture more quickly. So, one thing to keep in mind is how we can adapt our skincare products routines to accommodate the changing climate. Switching to richer moisturisers that provide deeper hydration, with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, Glycerine, and ceramides, help retain moisture and create a protective barrier against the harsher elements. Natural oils such as Jojoba, Argan and Rosehip are also excellent for locking in moisture and nourishing the skin in the colder months, so look out for these ingredients if you’re due a re-stock of your sustainable skincare products.

It’s also a good idea to be mindful of how often you’re exfoliating during your face care routine through the autumn and winter seasons. Exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover and that said, it’s important to strike a balance as the weather gets cooler, as over-exfoliating can lead to dryness and irritation. Opt for gentle, natural exfoliants like Walnut Shell or Rice powders, these are lactic acid or enzyme-based products that provide effective exfoliation without stripping the skin of its natural oils. Or, if time allows, indulge in a nourishing face mask. Curl up on the sofa with a blanket and the warmth of a hot chocolate as your skin drinks in the extra hydration of nourishing ingredients like Irish moss seaweed, rich in vitamins and minerals, or Dandelion Root extract, known for its detoxifying benefits. These ingredients help to soothe, hydrate, and rejuvenate, leaving you soft and glowing – a treat for dry skin. Try my Bath House favourite – Kombu Seaweed Face Mask.

Embrace Cosy Self-Care Rituals
Why not fully lean into the cosy season? Buy the pumpkin spice latte, make the comforting soup, or light that scented candle you’ve been saving for a special moment. As the days grow shorter and the nights cooler, incorporating tiny self-care rituals can have a profound effect on your overall mood. A great way to unwind in the evenings is with a warm bath, laden with natural bath salts and oils to help relax your muscles and soothe your mind. Choose calming and grounding fragrances like Lavender, Chamomile or Sandalwood to create a relaxing atmosphere, not only benefiting your skin but also providing a much-needed mental break. The activities we engage in regularly also act as a form of self-care, particularly those that get us out and about and the endorphins flowing. Try Bath House Velvet Orchid & Cardamom Bath Oil, for a deeply relaxing bathe.

Whilst staying active during the cooler months can be challenging, particularly if you’re put-off by chilly weather, it’s incredibly important for our wellbeing. For those not opposed to an autumn walk, the beautiful rich red and brown colours of changing leaves make getting outdoors that extra bit more enjoyable. And for when the weather is too harsh, consider indoor exercises like yoga or pilates, which can be done in the comfort of your home.

Mindful Moments This Autumn

Practicing mindfulness and meditation can help you stay grounded during seasonal transitions. Try cultivating an inviting and cosy space with a relaxing ambiance, with luxury candles or bedroom diffusers, dedicated for rest and reflection, whether it’s a cosy corner in your home or a spot in nature where you can unwind.

Taking a few moments each day to focus on your breath and clear your mind can reduce stress and improve your general wellbeing. I’ve found that practicing mindfulness, making the conscious effort to be present and appreciate my surroundings, has had a real impact on my stress levels. It doesn’t need to be for long, but becoming aware of the ‘here and now’ – whether you’re walking the dog or washing the dishes – can help significantly when it comes to managing negative thoughts.

Paying extra mind to your evening routines is especially important as the nights gradually turn darker. Establishing calming rituals can promote better sleep and relaxation, for example, incorporating soothing scents like Lavender or Chamomile into your bedtime routine, whether through essential oils, candles or skincare products. A warm cup of tea and a book can also help you wind down, signalling to your body that it’s time to relax and prepare for a restful night’s sleep.

Embrace The Changes

Autumn is a season of change and renewal. By adjusting your selfcare and skincare routines to accommodate these changes, you can lean into the beauty of the season. Life isn’t just made in the big moments; rather, it is a culmination of the little habits we repeat every single day.

Embrace these moments – the cosy, nurturing aspects of autumn / winter season – and let them improve your mood and wellbeing as the air gets colder and the nights get longer.
